Prefab or custom
Iron fence panels come two ways. Prefabricated panels arrive powder coated black in stock sizes, and they are bolted or welded on site. Custom panels get welded in our own shop to match a design or an existing fence, and they go to the powder shop after we build them, which adds about a week for a small batch and two for a big one.
Custom panels take any powder coat color. On both, the pickets sit about 4 inches apart by code.
Against chain link
A plain 6-foot chain link run costs $55 to $70 a foot, and six-foot iron runs mostly $70 to $90.
Against wood
Wood stains, dries out and warps, so it gets redone on a cycle. Steel under powder coat or galvanizing does not; the coating gets touched up where something scrapes it, and the steel underneath stays covered.

A standard commercial iron panel run costs $40 to $120 a foot installed. The band is wide because a plain flat-top panel at 5 feet and a custom spear-top run at 8 feet are both iron. The height, the style, the grade of panel, how the posts set, and any tear-out decide where a job sits in it. A short run costs more per foot than a long one, because the setup and the trip get spread over fewer feet.

Iron fence panels go on sites such as:

- Screening around equipment, or a fence above the wall of a trash enclosure.

Where chain link fits better
Six-foot chain link costs less per foot than six-foot iron. On a long back-of-house run or a yard perimeter away from the street, that difference adds up to thousands of dollars.
Picking the panel
Flat-top and spear-top panels come in a commercial grade and a lighter grade, curve-top panels come in the commercial grade only, and heights run about 3 to 8 feet.

Where the fence faces the street or an occupied area, yes. For a back perimeter nobody sees, chain link covers it for less.
Iron panels or chain link?
Many sites use both: iron at the street, chain link around the back. Chain link is the lower cost per foot; iron goes where the fence is part of how the building looks.
Do iron fence panels need maintenance?
Little. A scrape in the powder coat gets touched up.
Is wrought iron different from ornamental iron?
Yes. Wrought iron is a different material, usually solid, found on old houses and rarely used for new installations.
