Dumpster Enclosure Repair: What Breaks and What It Costs

Hinges, cane bolts, a panel the truck pushed in, a bent upright: $900 to $3,000 to fix, against $3,500 to $15,000 for new gates.

Repaired commercial trash enclosure gate in Sacramento with new hinges and cane bolts, by Palmer Fence
An enclosure gate after new hinges, fresh cane bolts, and the deck panel re-welded to the frame.

The gates take the wear on a dumpster enclosure. The truck hits them, the hinges carry a leaf that swings every day, and the panels rust along the bottom where the wash-down water sits. The block wall outlasts everything hung on it, so almost every enclosure repair is gate work, at $900 to $3,000.

What breaks

  • Hinges. The weld cracks or the pin wears, the leaf drops, and the gate drags on the pad or will not close.
  • Cane bolts. They bend or go missing, and then nothing holds the leaf open or shut. The wind takes it into the truck’s path.
  • Panels. The corrugated or B-deck sheet gets pushed in by the truck, comes loose from the frame, or rusts through along the bottom edge.
  • The upright. A hit bends the vertical the hinges are welded to, and nothing above it lines up after that.
  • The gate post, once enough hits have worked it loose from the wall.

How it gets fixed

For hinges, the old ones get cut off, the post and the gate get ground clean, new heavy-duty hinges get welded on, and the leaf gets rehung and adjusted until it swings and closes. Missing cane bolts get replaced, with a sleeve set in the pad for them to drop into. A bent upright gets cut out and a new one welded in where the hardware mounts. Loose panels get re-welded to the frame; crushed or rusted ones come off and new corrugated sheet goes on.

The repair gets primer. Paint to match the rest of the gate is an option and it shows in the price.

Rebuilt commercial dumpster enclosure gate leaves with new corrugated steel panels and cane bolts on a block wall enclosure in Elk Grove, by Palmer Fence
Both leaves rebuilt with new corrugated panels and cane bolts set in the pad.

Repair, or new gates

One hinge, a cane bolt, or a panel is a repair. When the uprights on both leaves are bent and all four panels are gone, the repair costs close to what new leaves cost, and a new pair built to the opening is the better buy. When it is close we price both.

New gates also get built to the clear opening you have now, which matters if the old ones were made for a different bin size and never quite fit.

What it costs

What broke, how many leaves it touches, and the finish.

The workInstalled
Enclosure gate repair$900 to $3,000
New gates, on a job with several enclosures$3,500 to $15,000 each

Hinges and a rehang on one gate sit at the bottom of the repair band. Both leaves rebuilt with new uprights, cane bolts and four new panels sit at the top, which is where the new-gate comparison starts to matter. One enclosure on its own costs more per unit than several on the same job, because the crew, the truck and the fabrication setup get spread across all of them. A roof or a fence above the wall is priced on top; those are on our trash enclosures page.

What to send us

  • A photo of each gate leaf, and one of the hinge side of the post.
  • What is broken: a hinge, a bolt, a panel, or the frame.
  • The clear opening width, if you have it.

We price most enclosure repairs from the photos.

Frequently asked questions

Can you fix a gate the garbage truck hit?

Yes. That is the most common enclosure repair: a bent upright, cracked hinge welds, and a panel pushed in. It comes back as a repair unless both leaves are bent, and then we price new gates next to it.

Do you clean out dumpster enclosures?

The cleaning and the wash-down are the hauler’s or a janitorial company’s work. We build and repair the gates, the roof, and the steel.

Why do the panels rust along the bottom?

Water sits along the bottom edge of the sheet after rain or a wash-down, so the coating goes there first. A rusted panel comes off and new sheet goes on; the frame usually stays.

Can you add a roof or a fence on top while you are there?

Yes. A fence above the wall, flat top or spear top, or a roof in chain link or metal decking. Both are priced on top of the gate work.

How long does it take?

Hinges and cane bolts are usually one visit. New panels or a new upright get cut in the shop and go on at a second one.
