Commercial ornamental iron fence and gate installed by Palmer Fence in Sacramento

A commercial fence is priced by the foot, and the material sets the range. Chain link, ornamental iron, and iron backed with expanded metal each sit in a different range per foot, and the height, how many feet of fence, and the ground the posts go into move the price inside that range. The sections below give each range and explain why a short run and a hard surface cost more.

How the materials compare

Chain link is the lowest cost per foot: $55 to $70 a foot installed on a 6-foot commercial run.

Ornamental iron is welded steel tube, powder coated or galvanized, at $40 to $120 a foot installed. The band is that wide because a plain flat-top panel at 5 feet and a custom spear-top run at 8 feet are both iron.

Anti-climb mesh, a heavier gauge, a taller fence, and barbed or razor wire on top all raise the price per foot. An 8-foot iron run backed with expanded metal sheet runs $140 to $300 a foot.

What it costs per foot

The fenceInstalled, per foot
6-foot commercial chain link, full run$55 to $70
8-foot chain link$88 to $105
Ornamental iron, standard commercial$40 to $120
6-foot iron, the common middle$70 to $90
8-foot security iron with expanded metal backing$140 to $300

Those are furnish-and-install numbers, with the gate included where the job had one. The height, the style and the ground the posts go into move a job inside each band.

Why a short run costs more per foot

The setup, the drive and the crew’s day cost the same to build 25 feet as to build 250, so on a short job that cost lands on very few feet. A run under 50 feet costs about two and a half times the per-foot price of a run over 150 feet. Runs over 150 feet settle around $70 to $90 a foot in the middle.

Why the site changes the number

A post set in open dirt costs the least. Where the fence line crosses concrete or asphalt, each hole is broken out or core-drilled first, which adds labor to every post. Tearing out an old fence adds the labor plus the hauling and the dump fees.

FAQs

What is the cheapest commercial fence?

Chain link, at $55 to $70 a foot on a 6-foot commercial run. With slats, 6-foot chain link runs about $59 to $67 a foot, and three-strand barbed wire adds $4 to $8.

How much does a gate cost?

A pedestrian gate runs $1,600 to $4,300 and a rolling gate on V-track $2,100 to $2,700.

Do you price by the linear foot?

The fence run is figured per linear foot, then the gates, the access control, the tear-out and the site conditions get added on top. A short run prices higher per foot than a long one.

Does height change the price much?

Yes. A taller fence takes more steel and heavier posts set deeper, so a 7 or 8-foot run costs more per foot than a 6-foot one.

Do you charge for a quote?

No.

Can you match a budget?

Often. Tell us the number you are working with and we will tell you what it buys and where a different material or height fits it.
