A guard and a handrail are two different rails at two different heights, and commercial stairs usually need both: the guard keeps people off the edge, the handrail is what they hold. A plain two-rail galvanized handrail core-drilled into existing concrete sits at the bottom of the range, and a 42-inch guard with mesh infill and powder coat sits at the top.
How the posts land moves the number too. Core-drilling sets the post into the existing slab. A base plate bolts it down on top. Rooftop work and custom fabrication run above the band, because the posts get plated and the shop time goes up.

How tall does a railing have to be?
A guard at an open edge is at least 42 inches on commercial work. A graspable handrail on a stair or ramp sits 34 to 38 inches above the nosing. Commercial stairs usually need both.
Do you do ADA-compliant handrails?
Yes. ADA handrails run 34 to 38 inches with a graspable profile and extensions past the top and bottom step. On a ramp, handrails are required once the run rises more than 6 inches. Galvanized pipe is a frequent call outdoors, because there is no coating to keep up.
Do you build rooftop guardrail?
Yes. The posts get plated to the deck instead of set in the ground, and the plates have to land on something solid. Shingles come off where the posts go, and putting them back is roofing work.
Can I get a custom or ornamental design?
Yes. Inside the code heights the design is open: pickets, horizontal rails, mesh infill, or ornamental work like rings, scrolls, and knuckles. Send a picture of one you like and we will build it in steel.
Do you install road guardrails?
Yes, W-beam guardrail on posts, built to the city or agency plans.
