Panic Bar Gates: What an ADA Pedestrian Gate Is and What It Costs
A pedestrian gate with a panic bar usually runs about $3,200 to $4,700 installed.

A pedestrian gate with a panic bar usually runs about $3,200 to $4,700 installed, for the gate alone. The price depends on whether the gate is new or an existing gate is being modified, and on the hardware.
In this guide
What the gate includes
A pedestrian gate built for accessible exit usually includes:
- A panic exit device, the push bar that opens the gate from the inside
- A steel plate across the gate frame that the panic hardware mounts to
- A kickplate at the bottom of the gate
- A self-closing hinge
- A lock box for the latch
The project plans or the local building department set the requirements a gate has to meet.

- A) Posts: 3 in square steel tube
- B) Gate frame: 1-1/2 in square steel tube
- C) Pickets: 3/4 in square steel tube
- D) Kickplate: 10 in steel plate
- E) Plate for the panic hardware: 10 in steel plate
- F) Steel plate, 1/8 in by 3 in
- G) Hardware box
- H) Panic exit hardware
- J) Hinge and closer set
- K) Post cap
- L) Expanded metal sheet
Modifying an existing gate
An existing steel gate can sometimes be modified instead of replaced. The mounting plate and the kickplate are welded onto the frame, and the panic hardware, the lock box and the hinge are installed. The frame and the condition of the gate determine if it can be modified or has to be replaced.

The hardware we install
On panic bar gates we prefer to install a Locinox Mammoth 180, a hydraulic hinge with a built-in closer. For the panic hardware, a Von Duprin exit device is one option, and the most expensive one. Many other panic bars meet the same requirements, and some openings can use a lever handle instead, depending on what the plans allow. The hardware changes the price.

Steel or chain link
A panic bar gate can be an ornamental steel gate or a chain link gate. A steel gate can also be backed with expanded metal, a steel mesh sheet that covers the openings between the pickets.
What it costs
The price depends on whether the gate is new or a modification of an existing gate, the hardware, and the finish.
| The work | Installed, gate only |
|---|---|
| Modifying an existing steel gate | $3,200 to $3,700 |
| New steel gate with panic hardware | $3,700 to $4,700 |
A fence section next to the gate adds to the price.
The prices of other gate types are on our commercial gates page.
What to send us
To price a panic bar gate, we need:
- A photo of the opening, or of the existing gate
- The width of the opening
- The fence or the wall the gate attaches to

Frequently asked questions
Do you pull the permit?
No. The owner or the general contractor handles the permit. We build the gate to the plans.
Do you install the rest of the fence too?
