Grey steel dumpster enclosure with metal gates built by Palmer Fence

The price of a dumpster enclosure changes with how it is built. The gates can hang on a block wall, or the whole enclosure can be built in steel or chain link. The gate panels can be corrugated sheet, B-deck, mesh or slatted chain link, and a roof or a fence can go on top of the wall. A mason lays block walls and a concrete contractor pours the pad; we build the metal. This post gives the price of each build and of a repair, and what each choice changes.

What drives the cost

The price depends on the opening width, one leaf or two, how many enclosures are on the same job, the panel type, and the finish. A repair price depends on how much of the existing gate can stay.

Your city sets the enclosure standards for size, screening and access, and the owner or the GC pulls the permit. We build to the approved plan. The City of Sacramento publishes its enclosure design standards.

What we build and repair

  • Gates: welded steel frames and leaves sized to the opening, one leaf on a narrow one and two on a wide one.
  • Panels: corrugated metal, B-deck sheet, mesh, or slatted chain link on the leaves, primed or painted.
  • Hardware: posts set in concrete or plated to the slab, Locinox or Mammoth hinges on the bigger gates, cane bolts to hold each leaf.
  • A roof, or a fence above the wall: chain link or metal decking on a steel frame for a roof; flat-top or spear-top pickets set on the block for a fence.
  • Repairs: new hinges, cane bolts, re-welds, panel swaps, a bent upright cut out and replaced.

What it costs

The workInstalled
Gates for one enclosure, several enclosures on the same job$3,500 to $15,000 each
Enclosure gate repair$900 to $3,000
Full chain-link enclosure, whole build, 8 ft, about 13 by 20 ft$9,000 to $11,000

Primer only sits at the bottom of the gate range and painted at the top. One enclosure on its own costs more per unit than four on the same job, because the crew, the truck and the fabrication setup get spread over fewer gates. A roof, a fence on top of the wall, or bollards inside the enclosure are priced on top.

Repairs

Enclosure repairs run $900 to $3,000. A leaf starts dragging, a hinge tears loose, the truck backs into a panel, or the cane bolts are gone and the gate will not stay open or shut. New hinges, cane bolts and a re-weld of loose panels sit at the bottom of the band.

The whole enclosure can be built in chain link instead of block, plain or slatted, on steel posts. At 8 feet high on a footprint of about 13 by 20 feet, the whole build runs $9,000 to $11,000.

FAQs

What does a dumpster enclosure gate cost?

$3,500 to $15,000 for one enclosure’s gates when several are on the same job, primer only to painted. One enclosure alone costs more per unit. A repair runs $900 to $3,000 depending on how many panels are replaced, if the uprights are bent, and the finish.

Do you repair enclosure gates?

Yes. Repairs cover new hinges, cane bolts, re-welds and panel swaps.

Can you match the panels and the paint?

Yes. Corrugated or B-deck panels, sprayed or powder coated to match the existing color as close as it can be matched.

Does a dumpster enclosure need a roof?

Some jurisdictions require a cover over the bins and some do not. A roof is framed in steel and covered in chain link or metal decking.

Can you build the whole enclosure in chain link?

Yes. A full chain-link enclosure, plain or slatted, 8 feet high on a 13 by 20 foot footprint, runs $9,000 to $11,000.

Who pulls the permit?

The owner or the GC, through the city. We build to the approved plan and the enclosure standards your jurisdiction sets.
