Fence types
Prefab panels or custom
Prefabricated
These are steel panels made in a factory. They arrive powder-coated black and sit in stock, so nothing has to be built from zero. The panels come in two thicknesses of metal, and the drawings below show both. There is more on them in our prefabricated steel fence panels guide.
Custom
Anything past stock panels is custom. We can build any design from zero in our shop. Found a metal fence you like online? Send us the picture. We can build it.
Stock panels come in two grades. The names only mean how thick the metal is. Both go on any kind of property.
"Residential" grade
"Commercial" grade
Both come in flat top, spear top, and curve top. Heights run from about 3 to 8 feet. Brands like Ameristar make their own premium panel lines; we install those too.
The finish is the other difference between the two. Stock panels show up already powder-coated, so we can install as soon as the material is in. Custom work gets welded first and then goes to the powder shop, which adds about a week for a small batch and about two for a big one. Extra pieces welded onto a stock panel get primed and painted, and paint never matches factory powder coat exactly. If the match matters on your job, bring it up before we quote so we can plan for it.

Start with the type. Residential-gauge panels are the cheapest way to do iron, commercial-gauge costs a step more, and custom depends on the design. After the type, the price follows how many feet you need and what we are setting the posts into. Every extra foot is more panel and more posts, and a taller fence takes more steel and deeper footings. Setting posts in concrete or asphalt, working a slope, or getting into a tight spot all take more time, and that shows up in the price. Below the surface
How the fence goes in
A post goes in every 8 feet because that is how wide the panels come. What changes from job to job is how the post meets the ground. In dirt we dig the hole and pour a concrete footing. On existing concrete we core drill through the slab and set the post in that hole. On other jobs the post sits on a base plate that bolts down on top.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a commercial iron fence cost in Sacramento?
The type of fence, how many feet, and the ground set the price. On the jobs we’ve built, iron fence ran about $40 to $120 per linear foot installed. Whole jobs have run from about $3,000 to $22,000. Custom and security work can go higher. Tell us how many feet and send a photo of the fence line, and we’ll give you a number.
What’s the difference between ornamental iron and wrought iron?
Real wrought iron is the old way: solid metal, worked by hand. It is not hollow. It is heavy and costs a lot, so today it shows up mostly as decoration. In general, people do not build fences from it anymore. A wrought iron fence today is almost always ornamental iron: steel tube with a powder-coated finish. It gives the same look, weighs less, fights rust better, and costs less.
Is "residential grade" panel too light for a business?
No. The grade names only tell you how thick the metal is. Residential grade: 1-inch rails, 5/8-inch pickets. Commercial grade: 1-1/2-inch rails, 3/4-inch pickets. Both grades go on any kind of property. Pick by what the fence has to take, not by the name.
Can you match our existing gates or fencing?
Yes. Matching your existing rail count, material, and finish is one of our most-requested jobs.
Do you powder-coat the fence, and can you match a color?
Stock panels come powder-coated black from the factory. Custom work gets powder-coated after we build it, and we can match a color to your site. Parts welded onto a stock panel get primed and painted, and paint does not match factory powder coat exactly. Hot-dip galvanizing is a special order: very expensive, so it only happens when the plans call for it.
How soon can the fence go in?
Stock panels are ready now, so those jobs start as soon as the material and the schedule line up. Custom work goes to the powder shop after we build it: about one week for a small batch, about two weeks for a big one. Then we install.
Can you build a high-security iron fence?
Yes. Security fence is most of what we build. One way is expanded metal sheets added behind the pickets, like the 8-foot fence we built in San Francisco. The other is custom, with pickets up to 1 inch thick set into the rail.
Do you repair or reinforce existing iron fence?
Yes. Bent pickets, vehicle damage, leaning posts, refinishing, and security add-ons to an existing fence, like metal sheets or privacy boards, are on our fence repair page.
Do you install gates too?
